This course is designed to introduce Lower Elementary students to HANYU PINYIN, the Chinese phonetic system, basic Chinese characters, daily-life vocabulary, simple expressions, and speaking with the correct tones. Lessons will also introduce various aspects of Chinese history and culture, including art, festivals, and music.
Our Mandarin instructor, Shanhui Chen, received her undergraduate education at the Shan Xi Normal University, in Shan Xi Province, China, and then earned a Master of Arts in Education from Alverno College. Ms. Chen, a native Mandarin speaker, is fully proficient in the current pedagogical technology for foreign language instruction as well as in integrating cultural activities in language instruction. Ms. Chen is trained in Chinese linguistics, history, culture, and literature and has noted skill in Chinese calligraphy, folk music and dancing, paper cutting, and cuisine.
