ART & SCULPTURE

Huichol Yarn Painting
July 1–5, Ages 6-9
The Huichol people live in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit in Mexico and for hundreds of years they have created colorful yarn paintings using symbols and designs, which date back centuries. The Huichol did not have a written language until recently, so these symbols were and are the primary form of preserving the ceremonies, myths and beliefs of ancient Huichol religion. In this class you will create your own large yarn painting consisting of colorful yarn pressed into boards coated with wax and resin. Most amazing is that you will learn the ancient and secret meanings of just about everything that the Huichol decorate. Join us in the element of ancient history and secret symbolic design, all to create a unique art form that allows for self expression.

Amazing Clay Habitats
July 8-12, Ages 6-9
In this class you will use clay to create a three-dimensional miniature diorama and design a scale model of an animal in its surrounding environment. Students will research the habitats of an animal of their choice (either extinct or living today) and develop a panorama out of clay. They will then use glazing techniques to bring their environment to life. This is a perfect chance for a student to develop scale modeling techniques, research skills, as well as creative clay handwork and sophisticated glazing methods.

Monster Puppetry
July 29-August 2, Ages 6-9
Jim Henson revolutionized the world of puppetry with the "Muppet," which first appeared on children's television shows in the 1970s. In this summer class students will learn to create their own extravagant Muppet using felt, foam, cloth and stuffing. Students will also learn about the 3,000-year history of puppetry in such countries as Japan, Vietnam, Egypt and India. The week will culminate in a raucous Monster Puppet Show written by the student puppeteers.
