Kathryn is thrilled to join the Toddler Program at Milwaukee Montessori School! She has always enjoyed working with children and is especially fascinated by the way toddlers explore and grow within the Montessori Method. Prior to joining the school, Kathryn created the programming for residents at a memory care community. It was there that she learned the benefits of Montessori activities for dementia patients to keep them engaged in meaningful and purposeful work throughout their day.
Once Kathryn had a child of her own, she became engrossed in researching child psychology and development and after reading more about Maria Montessori, she knew that following this path was her true passion. While taking care of a toddler at home, Kathryn delights in witnessing his new discoveries and is excited to watch the same developments in her students in the classroom. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre from UW-Milwaukee and will always enjoy singing, dancing, and playing piano with adults and with children!

The thing that drew Alesa to the school was the unique and exciting way Milwaukee Montessori School approaches learning. She loves being a part of the MMS community and is grateful for the relationships she has built with the families here. She feels privileged to do the work she does with and for your students – it doesn’t feel like work to her! In her life outside of MMS, Alesa loves spending time with her husband and son (MMS class of ’33!), doing escape rooms, reading murder mystery books, and drinking tea (read: pretending to be British).

Kenya spends her free time playing with her daughter and husband, going to the zoo, visiting parks, and cooking. Her favorite place to go is the library because she’s an avid reader.
Harper started her most recent journey at MMS in 2016. She spent most of that time as our resident substitute teacher and creating social-emotional curriculum for the School, but this year she’s taking on a new challenge as a Children’s House Directress.
Originally from Evanston, Illinois, Harper, her husband, and their two children have been living in Wauwatosa for almost two decades. She has a Master’s degree in Art Education and a BFA in Photography. For over 10 years, Harper taught art to elementary-aged students in the Wauwatosa school district, and we’re thrilled she’s been with us ever since.

Her children attend the School as well, and she loves getting to see them grow each day. In her off time, Harper loves to cook, tend to her massive vegetable garden, travel, play with her kids, and of course, take photos of her many adventures.

Monica Van Aken Ed.D. has served as the Head of School at Milwaukee Montessori School since 1999. In 1926, her grandmother completed her training with Maria Montessori and was her father’s Montessori teacher in Germany until the time that Hitler closed their school because it was filled with children from Jewish families. Her mother took her Montessori training in Germany with Montessori’s proteges along with Mario Montessori in England.
For over 30 years, she taught at Whitby Montessori School in Greenwich, Connecticut where she attended school up until high school. Because Monica knew how to use all the Montessori materials, in the summer when she visited her grandparents in Germany, her grandmother paid her (in chocolate at first) to sit and help her students with their lessons. Monica was ten years old at the time and quite happy to be paid for the responsibility she had. She remembers deciding that she was going to be a teacher after taking that first bite of chocolate at the end of her day of “work”.

From a young age, Ashley knew that she wanted to work with children. Her love for them began when she was 15 years old and worked as a babysitter for several families, and then eventually as a full-time nanny. After high school, Ashley began her schooling to work in the education field. Initially attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to study Early Childhood Education, Ashley later sought better opportunities here in Milwaukee, so she moved back to her hometown. Here in Milwaukee, she plans to finish her schooling within the next year or two.
Ashley hopes to learn more about the children here at MMS and aims to help them grow as individuals. She loves the structure of each classroom and how each is different in their own way. Ashley’s goal is to make sure the children have fun learning as she teaches them new things such as putting on their coats, or even simple tasks like throwing their garbage out. Her ultimate dream is to someday run her very own child care center!
Outside of MMS, Ashley loves spending her free time with family, traveling, and exploring new cities. She continually stays active whether it’s going for long runs or playing soccer with her 10-year-old cousin!

While completing her undergraduate degree, she worked at multiple Whitewater schools within the district; in which, she served as a teacher’s aid and tutor for elementary-aged children. She has also spent time working at a Milwaukee Public High School in a 9th-grade algebra class as an assistant teacher and personal tutor. During her free time, she enjoys watching documentaries, exploring new restaurants, and traveling as much as possible. This is Nakiyah’s first time experiencing a Montessori school and looks forward to the opportunities and adventures MMS will bring.
Dana’s passion for working with children started early in high school. During those years she cared for children as a part-time job. After high school, she became a part of the YMCA team in their Before and After School Program and the Summer Program. She is currently a part-time student at MATC and working towards her degree in Human Services. Dana is very excited to start working with a younger student population in our Toddler One Classroom. She is thrilled to gain more knowledge and experience here at MMS.
Dana grew up in the Milwaukee area and in her spare time enjoys spending time with her family, friends and her goofy two Pugs.
