Milwaukee Montessori School

Music Program

Milwaukee Montessori School's Music Program is designed to bring significant music experiences to children at all levels of the school.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." ― Plato

Children's House and Lower Elementary (From Age 3 to Grade 3)

Studies show that young children who actively participate in music classes show greater improvements in speech, reading, and overall focus. Most importantly, children who engage in music class love to perform for an enthusiastic audience!

In our music classes, children practice singing, moving to music, and playing Orff instruments designed for young children. Some lessons are taught using the Kodaly Method where children develop musical skills and concepts using folk songs, hand signs, rhythm symbols, and repeated syllables. Children prepare for performances learning proper vocal and performance techniques while exploring a wide range of musical styles from folk and classical to pop music and show tunes.

Upper Elementary (Grades 4 – 6)

In Upper Elementary, students learn songs from a wide range of vocal and instrumental styles, such as standards from the Great American Songbook, Jazz, Blues, Afro/Latin, and odd and mixed-meter music. Students begin to develop ear training and the basics of music notation while focusing on learning the skills that make group performances both musically and visually enjoyable.

Junior High (Grades 7 and 8)

Junior High students use their accumulated musical literacy to compose and perform their own musical pieces. Professional composers-in-residence join our faculty members in providing intensive instruction in musical notation, composition, and lyric development. Once compositions are completed, students prepare them for performance as solo pieces or within ensembles that they organize themselves. A culminating concert in the winter celebrates our students’ creations.
